Election day could be a mess. The new touch screen in his untested and has problems. In Maryland, machines shut down from overload. Touch screen is not quite ready for prime time. Some can provide a paper trail which is necessary for recount and others can not. At the moment there appears to be 4 choices. First, is the touch screen with and without paper ballots,. Second is
the old pull jobs like casino slot machines that produced those hanging chads of the 2000 election.
After that is the optical scanner which enjoys quick and accurate counts and a paper card ballot
for recount and last is the paper ballot that can be accurate but lengthy in the count.
There are now ads out to get computer geek’s who can fix the touch screens as they burn out. Additionally, you buy keys on the internet to screw up the machines. Hopefully, many precincts will have paper ballots.
THE ECONOMIST notes that a quick shift back to paper ballots or optical scanners seems to be the best bet. At this moment, 3000 or more counties have the scanners, however a third of the remaining have those touch screens that could cause lots of trouble.
Ladies and gentlemen, why don’t you ask for a paper ballot and see what happens?
