PENTHOKOKUS Wage insurance is now being offered by both some of the Republican and the Democratic candidates. Your job has been outsourced, rise in productivity by temping and related, or innovation leaves particularly the middle class and the working poor out of jobs. Denmark’s wage insurance is 5% of GDP that would mean $400 billion in USA. However, Denmark pays 80% of previous salary. The USA is not that generous and is deeply involved in a war and is 9 trillion in debt. How about $10,000 dollars a year with the stipulation that the recipient gets retraining or is actively seeking a new job. The 10,000 would be over and above any state benefits.
Expect to hear more about this later.
BUSINESS WEEK (2008) 1/21
FARZAD/ 71-72
It was a dismal decade and the worst growth that we have seen since the 30’s. Surely all those tax cuts and related should put us at the top of the heap. We are #1 in productivity.
HOWEVER, growth for the first century of the 21st century is just above the great depression. Then comes the stagflation 70’s followed the Vietnam 60’s and as we climb, there is the 40’s and the Second World War. Then the 80’s with a 3 trillion in unadjusted dollars debt. Followed by the 90’s with a 5.4 billion surplus. The best decade was the 50’s. Our competitors were rebuilding and we rebuilt the infrastructure of the country. For white America it was the best of times.
From the prosperity of the 90’s to the near Depression of this first decade, it only took us
7 or 8 years to go into the toilet. Foreign countries are burying major corporations and we are in a fix for growth. Write off the market for the next couple of years.
NEWSWEEK (2008) 1/21
JONES/76-77
By the civil war, photography was maturing. It could pick up the details of dead bodies and remains with their heads gone. When both the North and the South saw the war with real clarity, they were aghast. How could a good God let such things happen? Previous to this time, war was glorious for the winners and artists could draw it so. However, this was different. Most died of a wound that became infected and killed most soldiers. Black
Soldiers got the least amount of attention.
When so many died and their bodies buried without knowing who they were it violated middle class sensibility. A good person should die at home with family and friends with them. Poor people and the homeless died at hospitals.
And so the country was in shock and the USA was called the “Republic of Suffering.”
THE WEEK (2008) 1/18
DEXTER 48-49
What’s in a name? If you can’t judge a book by it’s cover, does the title attract you?
Dexter recounts all the work and worry in titling the names of such books as
CATCH 22, WINNIE-THE-POOH, THE SWISS FAMILY ROBINSON, MOBY DICK, and THE GREAT GATSBY.

Belief about anything, it has been discovered has a nasal overtone. When you say 2 plus 2 is equal to 5 which are wrong, your anterior insula lights up. After one states that 2 plus 2 is equal to 4 a correct statement, the ventromedial prefrontal cortex is activated. Incidentally, all of this is monitored by fMRI.
Soon we should hear about the fMRI as a lie detector.
