THE VOTING RIGHTS ACT
It is a cold Tuesday night, in an African American voting precinct. Folks have been standing there for hours and in some areas, one hour means moving the line 25 feet. Here it comes. Here it comes, as a society it is “our 19th nervous breakdown.” Elections should be fair. For whom? Remember the words hanging chads in the Florida election of 2000?”
Nearly fifty years ago, people lost their lives for the right to vote. Now the Supreme Court appears to have squashed a least a part of that struggle. Standing in the rain, fighting the elements, facing the wind gusts, It’s plantation time. And yet, even as this is being written no one is quite sure what is going to happen. Although the Supremes changed the ease to vote in the past, they now have made it harder.
For Democrats, immediate sadness can evaporate as the Republican Party runs into another Cemented Cultural Wall. Can Black people and others vote? Maybe. In the past, Congress quickly supported the Voting Rights Act by huge majorities. Now that the Republican party has to suffer the membership of Tea Party types, all kinds of things may/or may not happen. To the Tea Party, there job is to metasize throughout the Republican party to create a cancerous killer, that can force a big agenda will a small strategic force. Their heart still remembers “the day they tore old Dixie down.ā€¯Throw in a squeaky flashes of the Black and White 50’s and you have the vision.
If Blacks fight back, they could do so in some easy ways. I will just mention one. They stand in line, so let’s make a carnival. You see big boom boxes with some hard drivin’ music. Others have brought folding chairs, umbrellas, jackets, and local merchants who cater to Blacks and other Democrats would be happy to have Big Signs indicating free coffee, and porta potties. The local and some national televisions stations are interviewing people who are going to vote. Folks interviewed say they just love the Democratic candidate and why did Governor So and So pick on Black People and poor people of all colors? Some of the feed is going overseas to all of our allies and enemies. The whole world is watching. This what happens in America? By the way, who is the Villain? It’s not the Democratic Party.
There are many ways to try to get voters to the polls. One used is from political sociology, social psychology, and counseling psych. It is called PARADOXING. You know it as” reverse psychology.” It is easier to get a group riled up against something than the other way around. Further, it can be enjoyable. So the city council makes a lot of the that described above as illegal. Well, new ideas pop up. It is over and over again. So if Tuesday night was interesting to political junkies, now America would like to see the commotion and all the famous people who are there for the television coverage and support the cause. What will the Northern Yanks do next? Somebody tell Chris Matthews and Revered Al on MSNBC and O’Reilly on Fox.
