Huffington: Some issues are missing at convention

TAMPA — Arianna Huffington is concerned about some of the issues that are not being discussed at the Republican convention.
Increased poverty is one; Afghanistan is another.
Visitors to the Republican convention “might be forgiven for not realizing we are in a war,” Huffington told reporters and editors of USA TODAY.
The Republican-turned-Democrat is now in her seventh year as editor in chief of The Huffington Post, the news aggregation website that draws millions of visitors every day.
A frequent commentator on public events, Huffington is considered a liberal. But Huffington said she — and The Huffington Post’s coverage — are not reflexively ideological, and neither are most of her readers.
For example, Huffington said she agreed with some of the things vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan said in his acceptance speech last night. She added that while Ryan did a good job of “diagnosing” the nation’s problems, he did not say “how he is going to fix the problems.”
Huffington said The Huffington Post includes “a lot of Republicans, a lot of independents” in its readership. She noted that she and conservative Joe Scarborough, for example, both oppose the war in Afghanistan.
“I see our coverage as beyond left or right,” Huffington said.
