PUBLISHING FEES IN ACADEMIA Introduction One of the authors reviewed available literature and analyzed issues dealing with publishing in academia with limited resources (Snell et. al 1976, Snell et. al. 1994.) One of the problems or opportunities now associated with publishing in higher education is the cost . Numerous high quality journals have discovered that to survive with diminishing resources, they must ask the author or authors to help pay for the printing and distribution of the article. Funds from the authors can not alone support the publication. Because they are not mass marketed, do not have major advertisers or associations to support them, expenses must be shared with the writers. It is not uncommon, for college and universities to pay for publishing costs.* These costs include pagination fees, manuscript reviewer fees, subscription costs, and mandatory membership if an association is in part sponsoring the journal.** A selected list that has some form of publishing fee includes the following: American Sociological
Review, American Economic Review, Americas Review,

Additionally, individuals who give papers at conferences where expenses can no longer be covered by their host academic institutions, must be considered part of publishing costs. Special note: the Journal of Economics and Sociology go out of their way to indicate that fees are not charged to the writer. It would appear that publishing fees are becoming more common. |
