YOUNG GIRLS

Brumberg, Joan (1997) THE BODY PROJECT New York: Random house

Brumberg traces the history that covers numerous societies control and protection of girls. For the most part girls were trained to be submissive asexuals. In the 20th century, women were able to become their potential. There are still many roadblocks but that seems to be reducing.

However, with the freedom come some problems. Brumberg does not want to return to the old days, but wants to build support systems so that young girls are not raped in subtle and in hostile ways by older alpha males. This type of statutory rape, date rape, and other types of sexual assault scar young women for life.

They need ways to say no and they need ways to get older females and males to help them. They also need their parents.

The support system is extremely important from middle school through college. Strategies are discussed.
