WATERWORKS

U.S.NEWS & WORLD REPORT (2007) 6/4

LAVELLE (37-54)

Where there is not water, people can not exist. In the states, water costs about $2.50

per 1,000 gallons. In Denmark, it is $8.50 as it is in Germany. Folks we are running out of water.

Not now, but not far in the future,  you may be interested in the following: replacing the grass in your yard to something else, aerating your water so that you use less, don't let the toilet run, use less water in the toilet that has more power to push residue, buying drinking water, and taking a bath in recycled water, wash clothes less often, taking your car to a carwash rather than doing it yourself. There are numerous others, but the great motivator will not be out of concern for the environment. That works for only a few. It has to be money. When you get a large water bill and no one politically questions it (they know better) you change.

The USA has 52, 837 water systems. More than half of them serve 500 people or less. That is very inefficient. The drinking water has only been improved since 1974. In many other countries, you don't go near the water.

Public water is being sold off to private equity firms. They buy water monopolies to make money so it would appear the price will continue to increase. EVERYWHERE IN THE WORLD, WATER IS A PROBLEM. Why didn't you know this? It has been slowly building since

the turn of the 19th century. Voters brought the Democrats in 2006 and they started talking about it. Bush says that we have global warming. That is a big change. If it is true, the chances are that we could be energy independent like we were in the 50's. HOWEVER, we don't know if we can restore the global warming issue. That takes world wide co-operation, cheap energy that does not generate heat.

The big element that is not mentioned is population. The USA TRIPLED it's population since 1910.

The world is 6 billion and may double in the latter part of this century. People need water for food and 70% of the crops use fresh water.

Let's talk about LAS VEGAS. If survival is that big, we  don't need Las Vegas. However, folks like to gamble and do other activities. At the moment, they use water that is pumped from 235 miles away. Money talks and Vegas needs water and lots of energy for a city that never sleeps.

LETS GO TO THE OTHER END. 1.1 billion lack adequate water world wide and 2.6 go without adequate sanitation. World wide water is mismanaged, polluted and wasteful irrigation. With global warming, there will be less fresh water in the aquifers. Controlling waters is like legislating

peace.

3% of the world's water is fresh, but only 1% is usable. Water desalinated is great for cities, but it  is not profitable to grow crops.

CHARMICHAEL (52-56)  WHAT YOU JUST READ ABOVE CONTINUES HERE.

On balance, the richer the country, the more water that they have. (There are exceptions) However, those rich countries have more and they use more. The best is USA and Canada and the worst is all of sub-sahara Africa. Australia is going through a terrible drought. and if things continue only residents get water, so there goes farming. The very worst is East Africa

Now lets look at the Colorado River. If you recall the movie CHINATOWN, one of the salient features is the use of water. Water that could have gone to farmers in Colorado was

going to suburbanites in Los Angeles. L. A,.is a city on a desert. Without water,L. A. withers unless they get desalinated water. At any rate, other things are happening on the river. Five females are born to for every male. There are also bi-gendered fish.  New emerging containments that are in drugs, tooth paste, and related are screwing up the system even when the water is relatively clean.

It will take even more to clean the water with new technology to get more powerful and elusive drugs.

YARBOFF (64-66) Culturally, there appears to be an emergence of the popularity of BETA MALES. See article.
