VIDEO STORES

______ (2004) “Beyond the video store” 12/6, p.91

An American movie generally goes through particular stages from release to oldies. The first stage is the release and promotion. You must go to a movie theatre to enjoy the cinema feature. Then it moves on to personal rental/ pay cable. After that, it heads to the premium channels on cable, followed by second tier movie channels, then to network television, and finally to the oldies on local television. Many of the top movies are replayed over and over on the second tier channels.

In the meantime, for those non-movie goers, renting is now distributed in the following ways. MAIL SERVICES- Movies are sent overnight to the consumer. DISPOSABLE DVD’S-you essentially buy a cheap version that has limited replay time. VIDEO STORES- You can rent by the hour or the day. There are late fees. VENDING MACHINES- The movies are available like colas and candy bars, you buy the DVD.

Some video stores can provide all of the services listed above.
