UNIVERSITIES: HOW MUCH BANG FOR THE BUCK?

Pekow, Charles (2005) How much bang for the buck COMMUNITY COLLEGE WEEK,
3/28, P. 21.

Slowly but surely, universities are receiving less and less support from the state and federal government. How does one measure the effectiveness of colleges and universities?

Here are some possible review standards.
1. How many students apply and are rejected?
2. What are the standards for the rejections?
3. How many students start their freshman year and complete their degree?
4. How do grads do after graduation?
5. How do the alumni value their education?
6. Will there be a NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND proficiency test for graduation and who will construct it?
7. Will professors teach to this test?
8. How much does it cost to educate a student?
9. Should accreditation be based on minimum standards or maximum standards?
10. How does the curriculum reflect one’s ability to gain employment after graduation?

These and other issues are ones that will or must be addressed in the future.
