| TWO
BOYS FOR EVERY GIRL
Omestad, Thomas (2004) “A Nation of Lost Boys” U.S. NEWS & WORLD
REPORT,
What is growing in China and India is numerous sex selection strategies that increase the number of boys over girls. Boys are favored because they are the financial support later in life for the parents. However as the sex ratio continues to favor males there is an unintended consequence. Too many males without mates are trouble. These individuals will probably spend a lifetime without a wife. When females are increased or introduce into a human population, civilization
emerges. There is a soothing effect to male behavior. In other words,
females help reduce violence. China has already put in place incentives for families to have more females. On the other side of the fence, women if given the choice have numerous suitors and lovers. Males learn new strategies to try to win the hearts of a dwindling population of women. The power of women is increased. On the other hand if they are heavily controlled, females become pawns in even more vicious struggles by males to gain a lover. Anecdotal information from places like Alaska where in certain areas females are few, males become even more pleasing. They go out of their way to be instructed on how to treat women as equals or better. The power of women dramatically increases in both symbolic and real ways. There is also the problem of “aging out.” Males in their years from 13 to 25 are obsessed with sex and violence. There is a looping effect of the desensitization of males by the environment and the increase in testosterone that give a society more trouble. Unless women can interact in selected instances with men, both sexes suffer. Males are especially vulnerable because male bonding usually does not include emotional intimacy that they get with female(s.) It is thus suggested that groups of teen males without females and without authority is even more trouble. China now wants to increase these “bare branches” (single unattached males) into the military to keep the young men out of trouble and continually under authority. And so it goes. |
