THE POPE’S LEGACY

Zuckerman, Mortimer (2005) John Paul’s II’s reach U.S. NEWS&WORLD
REPORT,
4/19, p.78

The Pope moved the church to the Right in terms of what was acceptable
in the church. However, his inter-faith dialogue was considerably to the
Left. He opened doors to Muslims and Buddhists and embraced Judaism. Jesus
was a Jew. However the scriptures portray him not talking with other Jews,
but with Jews who are outsiders and were abusive.

The Pope recognized that Jesus died both as a Jew and a Christian. That Israel is the home of Judaism. That Jews after the Diaspora were not punished by God, but outnumbered and overpowered by others.

When asked about the holocaust and what he did to help, the Pope
responded “not enough.”
