THE SECRET

NEWSWEEK (2007) 3/5

ADLER (52-58) THE SECRET IS OUT. 1.75 million copies have been printed for early March.

THE SECRET is a new wing of pop psychology. It goes like this, you attract what you are about. If you send out good vibes, good things come your way. The reverse is also true. If you want to lose weight, avoid looking at over weight people. That's it. Think about being slim .Rhonda Byrne is the author and she has 3 principles: ASK, BELIEVE, RECEIVE. The rest of the book is filled with positive thinking. In the states, it all goes back to the 1860's, it was called THE NEW THOUGHT MOVEMENT. You can think your way to happiness and money. Numerous others have followed since that time, but their spin is more a long the lines of self defeating thoughts and decisions. In psychiatry, positive thoughts are incorporated into cognitive and cognitive behavioral therapy a favorite among medicine at this time. It basically says, we will teach you to think practical but positive strategies and thoughts to make a go of it in life. It is generally accompanied by anti-depressants and anti anxiety drugs. However, if you FORCE yourself to think positive thoughts, the mind will resist. You slip up and be happy. However, thinking that having a BMW in your drive way is not a strategy that correlates with happiness. The BMW is a by product of working hard and working with others in a positive way. You can think negative thoughts, it is all part of life. However, you can gradually change to more positive thoughts. Having a higher power also helps.

Further, you learn new social skills. So, happiness happens spontaneously, but it can help to gear toward more positive strategies.

ADLER (66-70) You may see your city gently grow more green. Trees may end up in abandoned parking lots, and grass and plants could be found on the roofs.

THE NEW REPUBLIC (3/12)

BEINHART (6)  The editor of THE NEW REPUBLIC was asked by his wife why he backed the Iraq war? His answer is this. The USA is a conservative country and generally backs right wing governments (China is becoming a right wing country.) However, in the Iraq war the USA was supporting what appeared to be a popular uprising against a right winger and dictator. This war could bring democracy to the middle east. Well, it didn't but that was his answer. Further, it is possible that the war can be won and it is possible that a democrat could be elected.

STARR (21-24)

War and Liberalism can still go together. Many Liberals opposed both Vietnam and Iraq and they appeared to be correct, but history on both wars is still being written. However, Liberalism contribution to both world wars did defeat dictatorships. War is not inherently anti-liberal. We will probably be in more wars and it may be of benefit to support them. War is still evil, bad, ugly

and hellish, but there are times when the country must be defended because some one wants something from us and will kill to get it. Of course, if we go looking for war, it will easily happen.

U.S. NEWS& WORLD REPORT ( 2007) 3/5

GILGOFF(26-36)

The Evangelicals and perhaps conservative Roman Catholics are in a quandary. The top 3 Republican candidates have the wrong religion or have just become converts. Don't trust any of them. To make matters worse, the top candidate to beat a Democrat , Rudy Guiliani

is too, too liberal. In this election, they may just sit on their hands and fail to vote for a presidential candidate. None of thaw above is a friend. Sam Brown back would be good, but he is way back in the pack.

SCHULTE (46-47)

Zebra mussels have a special quality. They eat everything and clear up the water. In the mean time, the fish of all kinds die. The Great Lakes and the The Erie are in trouble. It looks like gridlock. The shipping industry is up against the fishing industry. Ballast water that comes from ships spits

zebra mussels into the water. They clean up the water and kill of the fish.
