THE HARRY TRUMAN THAT YOU DIDN'T KNOW

BESCHLOSS (32-37)

In previous essays relative to Muslim and Jewish interpretations of the birth of Israel, there was always an assumption that Truman was a Zionist. If Beschloss is correct, that appears to further from the truth. Truman didn't particularly like Jews and Bess his wife, would not allow Jews in her home. Truman did have a business partner that was Jewish and also a neighbor when he was growing that was a Jew. Further, Truman referred to New York City as the City of Israel.

He made other references that left one feeling that he sure didn't like Jews. In the USA at the time, the slaughter of Jews by Germany was just being known and recognized. Jews after thousands of years of wandering in marginality wanted to return to their homeland. The holy area of 3 major would religions is not the most abundant or profitable area in the world. In the mean time, a letter writing campaign by Jews and Christian Moderates pressured Truman to recognize that State Of Israel. . However, most of the government in the US was opposed to the plan based on military and diplomatic reasons. Through the persuasion of his former business partner of a few other Jews, he decided that the United States would recognize Israel. If it was the right decision or not, it was courageous one. By the way, his decision did not help him in his 1948 election. Many states that with large populations of Jews voted for Dewey.

We will never know what would happen if Israel was not recognized. It may be that the territory of Israel would still be at war. Most Americans are glad that Israel became a country, but most of the Middle East which is Muslim are not and will not recognize the Jewish country. It is the fate of Israel to build walls and moats around their country and at market value buy out Israeli Muslims.

Nearly every Jew should carry a gun and get the latest technology like bunker buster bombs. The war of last summer indicated that Israel is not invincible and thus the weaponry is probably needed.

Palestine will survive and improve by other Muslim countries investing in the region. Most Americans recognize the Two state solution

THOMAS (47) Dallek's new book suggests that Nixon and Kissinger had an odd but supportive relationship. when they were away from each other, the expletives were apparent. Nixon described Kissinger as  "my Jew boy." Kissinger referred to Nixon as a "meatball and drunk."

What they did share was that they were both very insecure and Nixon was very shy. They both shared in misery in trying to remake the world. That is a task far beyond mere mortals. They finally met at Hubert Humphrey's funeral. Their hellos were subdued and emotionally distant. Nixon was so ashamed of his tears. He so wanted to be like his mom and yet found himself acting like his dad.

SAMUELSON (55) China appears to be on the road to even greater exports. Its own people can not afford to buy the goods, because the safety net under communism has been ripped to shreds

under fascism. Wages are low and emergencies can put a family asunder.Bush administration is tepid to the Chine ese. They have our T- bills and if they cash them in to the world's spot market, our dollar could collapse.

THE ECONOMIST (2007)  May 5th

LEXINGTON (42) THE ECONOMISTS don't care about George Tenets new book. However, there were 2 points that make the book a good read. The administration want to go to war with Iraq no matter what would stay in the way. Secondly, although the CIA scored big successes in the Afghanistan war, since the Iraq war they have become soured because they were exploited by the current administration.

THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH in Latin America is facing a new problem. After the big change under Pope John the XXIII, the states and Europe were excited with the changes. This included LIBERATION THEOLOGY which was a combination of Marx and Jesus or a form of Christian socialism. In other words, the church would stand up to military dictatorships sponsored in part by the USA and Europe. With the death of Pope John, the church in the occidental cultures has taken a nose dive and priests are hard to come by. The Right has completely won. In Latin America it is Evangelical Protestants that are winning converts and so the church has a right wing message and a new liturgy of CHARISMATIC CATHOLICISM. It is also popular in the red states in the south west, here in the states. However, overall, the last 50 years has been hard on the church. Today, there are more ex-Catholics than practicing Catholics.

VOUCHERS ARE BACK IN THE NEWS. This time a Voucher oriented institute has conducted their own study using a cross sectional design comparing two sets of schools. All the participants

were poor and had other simi liar demographics. At the end of the study, 15% to 20% more likely to graduate, less likely to repeat a grade,  and scored a bit better on scholastic tests. Significant differences were not noted. Both sets did better overall. Thus, vouchers work. Maybe. We need an independent group to do a study and secondly, just because this study supports vouchers, it does not mean that when vouchers become policy that the poor will have a chance to be with anyone else that is richer. Poor Black students will be clustered together and the privates can always throw out the bullies and the laggards. So who gets them? The publics do Then we have another generation of unskilled. Maybe vouchers work. If so, we should use them, but change the curriculum so that everyone learns skills that business can use and the middle and uppers get

more courses dealing with pre through post modernism.

Sweden uses a totally open system. Students can choose any school that they want as long as they have a first come first served basis. It appears to work. The openness is capitalism. The first come, first served is socialism.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

(99) In studies with chimps, gestures come before language. It appears to be that way for

humans.

(100) a new gaseous metal has been discovered.

100) human bacteria can be used to kill of dangerous illness of the present. .
