THE GOLDEN AGE OF ADVERTISING-THE 60'S

Heimann, J. The golden age of advertising-the 60's Taschen  : Koln, Germany (English Ed.)

This 350 page book is all about the advertisements in the USA relative to numerous products and services. In the 21st century, the 60's conjures up to many readers civil rights, Vietnam War,

Bob Dylan, Beatles, Beach Boys and Rolling Stones. However, there was so much more.

The prologue is in English, French, German and Spanish. However, the pictures are mainly from here in the states.

The advertisements are divided into alcohol and tobacco, automobiles and related. As an overall

observation the pictures and drawings are of crisper looking individuals with males who have slightly oiled hair and a front flip. Women are very thin and have heavily lacquered sprayed hair. Suburbs are the big themes. Minorities are at a minimum and they are light. Autos are incredibly huge. Luxurious housing is nearly all glass and angular modern.

As the years progress, both females and males have longer hair and products are wrapped in acid

graphics. This is before the women's movement and there is not one competent looking female on any page. Back then, if you wanted , television telephones were available and did they flop. Very few wanted to come to the phone looking very, very casual. The internet has changed that somewhat.

Surprisingly, most of the famous back then are still known today although they may have passed on. The book is a hefty nostalgia trip and a look at America when the average white family was more wealthy in adjusted dollars then today.
