THE FINAL DAYS
NEWSWEEK (2009) 8/3 THE FINAL DAYS/ CALABRESI & WEISKOFF 24-32
During the final day of the Bush administration, most were working to make the Obama transition work. Cheney on the other hand was consistently trying to get his fellow follower Lewis (Scooter) Libby a pardon. Libby did not have to go to jail because of the early Bush decision. The last conversation was on the night before the Obama entry into the White House.
Bush had other advisers indicate that Scooter did not show any contrition. That Bush had reviewed the case and had done more than enough for the neo-cons and for Libby. Bush stuck to the book, Cheney pleaded that the entire administration would be viewed with malice if Libby was not given the pardon. Further, Scooter could no longer practice law.
The authors surmise that Cheney also worried about what history would say about the administration. He also worried that Libby may become a rebel and write a tell all book that could really hang the administration. Thus history ended on the 19th of January. Bush is now hopeful that he will gain stature over time as Truman was thought a failure at the time and is now thought of as one of the better president of the United States.

Humans live longer and healthier lives if they eat less. Starving and yo-yo diets are bad for folks, but a steadily low calorie meal over many years helps one’s health.
THE ECONOMIST (2009) 7/18 11
WHAT WENT WRONG WITH FREE MARKET ECONOMICS?
When Communism failed along with Democratic Socialism, THE NATION ran an entire issue on what went wrong. Writers apologized for the slaughter of millions of people of the poorly planned collectivized farms, and the lethargy in Democratic Socialism. Many said try a new Left of center capitalism of some sort and let it be. However, no longer use the word SOCIALISM. That was a decade ago and now THE ECONOMIST a right of center free market periodical is doing the same thing. However, it is not the same degree. NATION spent an entire issue. THE ECONOMIST spent one and half pages.
THE ECONOMIST apologizes, but does not go far. It first defends economics, but says macroeconomics needs an overhaul. Little is said about free markets self correcting, regulating crooks, the loss of trillions of dollars world wide over Laffer and Friedman pure economic poetry, Laissez faire just does not work. Financiers of the USA brought down directly and indirectly the world’s economy. So what is ahead? Of course the old horses will be around. However, there should be an emerging capitalism that keeps its ability to move quickly, but must be more monitored. On the socialist side, the adoption of left wing capitalism, this would mean social democratic capitalism. This uses the market which is mainly owned by private individuals and uses redistribution and regulation to create a middle class society.
ED SHOW MSNBC 6/22/ 5-6 CST.
After interviewing the social democratic party NPD Jack Layton, he described an imperfect system that has an 85% approval rating. If anything, you get down to this as an individual. With a private system you may go bankrupt. With a socialist system, you may have to wait. Most would prefer the second, because lesser illnesses means that a nurse or related medical individual will make daily or weekly visits for your problem. Pain meds are given generously and you can not lose your job because of it.
BUSINESS WEEK (2009) ROBERTS & BALFOUR 40-43
China with its resources is not chasing treasuries as much as car factories, appliance makers, oil fields, and related. If anything, China will probably be the dominant leader in reversing the Great Recession of 2008. The states is working on a huge debt incurred by the previous administration and the stimulus package of this administration...
At the time of this writing, there is an incredible shopping spree going on for China.
