THE DEATH OF A SALESMAN
BUSINESS WEEK (2006) 11/27
32-35/ WELCH The golden era for car salesman was in the 80's. After that, the cars of the Big Three began to sink in terms of sales. Even for the top selling Toyotas, commissions are off. What went wrong? First there are too many dealers and legislation protects some in some states to live on. Additionally, the starting prices by many auto companies have been lowered to attract buyers. Further, many can go to the internet and check Edmunds.com to see the real prices. Buyers are also more knowledgeable and have more opportunities to leverage against the seller. So, salesman who were making $80,000 a year are now getting half that. The job is still a good one for those 2 income families and for a person who is willing to work long hours. 50-58/ ROBERTS ET. AL China is cheating. The globalization theory had that foreign countries especially third world countries would get labor unions and improve working conditions. It hasn't happened. When regulators come through, some underage workers are hustled out the back door and the environment is cleaned up as best as possible. The managers also keep 2 books so that workers' wages are considerably higher in theory but not in reality. 68-70/ ASTON There are at least 5 new fixes to technologically "fix' global warming. They are:algae farming (algae can increase oxygen) cloud factories, moving flooded oceans routed into desserts, and salt the seas. All have risks. But innovators say that we can count on conservation alone to help us.
98-99/ MEDNICK Napping is now being encouraged in businesses. 118/ SCHMALENSEE Business schools do not teach what is necessary for business. Professor are awarded money and prestige for getting grants and publishing. More real world experience is necessary and the profs may not have it.
THE ECONOMIST (2006) 11/18
39-40/___________
Canada is one of the most diverse and tolerant countries in the world and their kindness is coming back to bite them. Some students from Islamic cultures will not assimilate. What they see in Canada, they do not want, but enjoy the income. There is a fundamental flaw or wonderful value in Islam. Revelation and reason are the same thing. There fore outside certain technological areas, Canada's culture is alien to them. They want to change it to conform with Muslim theology.
67-68/__________ More people are leaving their day job and blogging for a living. The overhead is low. Their opinions matter to enough people to keep readership up and they can also put on other links so that the blog is comprehensive and important to a niche market of perhaps millions.. They get their money from advertisements. Google ads are the most lucrative. 71-73/ ___________ The next big thing appears to be green technology. Please be warned. Next big things are cyclical. That means that they are hot for some time and then something else comes along. Be cautious in your investments.
THE WEEK (2006) 11/24
10/ ________ It appears that the earth is getting MORE trees not less. Pandas are coming back too. 20/ _______ The print media should give up on editorials. They have little influence and they have gotten in the way of searching out stories. That is communism, but with private property. 52-53/__________ A small number of people can not recognize faces. Therefore they seem distant and cold. Psychotherapists encourage these folks to identify a person by telling them ahead of time that they can't recognize a face and thus the other person can tell them who they are and how they met. Most folks with this nuerological disorder often choose occupations in which they work alone. US. NEWS & WORLD REPORT 11/27 38- 47/Ragavan What went wrong in Iraq? It was the wrong time, place, and leadership to conduct the war. When we bring some or all the troops home, we should celebrate the success of toppling the regime that was in power before we went in.(20 million dollars has been saved for such occasion.) 38-39/ PADGETT Miami is corrupt and very poor. Other than the tourists, most are service workers and their pay is very low. 40-49/ BIEMA The Pope is fighting a two front battle. It is against western secularism and mid-east Islam. The first may return to the church if Muslims become too violent.
NEWSWEEK (2006) 11/27 26-28/ ALTER They're back. The Clinton's however, they have an uphill battle. 49% indicate that they will not vote for Hillary. Many look back on the Clinton era nostalgically. The economy was good and people in the middle and bottom were doing well. There were a few short term wars, but most was well. However, there was a long term soap opera and folks don't want them again.
