SOCIAL SECURITY CHANGES NOT GENERALLY SUPPORTED BY NEWSWEEK

Sloan, Allan (2005) Social security a daring leap NEWSWEEK, 2/14, 41-54

On this issue, NEWSWEEK covers their bases. In the end column, George Will supports Bush's plan as does a Republican politico who is given equal time in this lengthy report.
However, the main economics writer, Allan Sloan supports the current social security pension with an additional and optional investment plan that is over and above social security.

On the whole, he opposes Bush's plan because even in the best circumstances, retirees get less. Middle and poor get even less. Further, there are so many domestic and foreign debt that we can't afford to do much now.

Medicare needs help and the less than popular prescription plan is nearly double from what was earlier projected. Iraq is going to cost more. At the beginning, oil sales would pay for the war.

Sloan indicates that the age requirement goes up or benefits reduced. Social security should remain stable.
