SMILEY SMILE / ROLLING STONE

adapted & revised by Prof. Joel Snell

I recall in 1967 when I first heard SMILEY SMILE. My PET SOUNDS album was getting scuffed, worn, and I expected more of the same from this album. When I came home from teaching at the university, I opened the engaging album cover and placed the stylus on the record. At first, it was great. Then came SHE’S GOIN’ BALD and I was in shock.
I finally resolved to only play the side without that cut and I was okay. SMILEY didn’t do well in the states, but UK loved it and it went up the charts to a top ten hit.
Here it stalled at 41. I still believe that it is an underrated album and I know full well the story behind SMiLE, but I think the album would have done better here without the pill popping bald headed lady in that one cut. SMILEY is an acid album, so think of my version as acid mixed with some valium.

Here goes:

GOOD VIBRATIONS (from RARITIES & GOOD VIBRATIONS CD)

HEROES & VILLAINS

GOOD VIBRATIONS SESSIONS (instrumental from GOOD VIBRATIONS)

WIND CHIMES
WONDERFUL

WITH ME TONIGHT

WHISTLIN’ IN

YOU’RE WELCOME

FALL BREAKS AND BACK TO WINTER

GETTING’ HUNGRY

LITTLE PAD (laughter at the beginning is deleted)

LET'S GO AWAY FOR AWHILE (FRENCH VERSION & PET SOUNDS)

GOOD VIBRATIONS (single from SMILEY SMILE)

That’s right; SHE’S GOIN’ BALD is deleted. It could later be included in bonus tracks..

The listening is easier. GOOD VIBRATIONS has a tragic story behind it, that is now resolved.
SMILE was the premier album of 2004.

SMILEY SMILE  is ranked as one of the top 40 albums of 1967 by ROLLING STONE.
