| SMILE 1
For years the lost classic of SMiLE was supposedly kept in the
faults of EMI-Capitol. However at this writing, Brian’s Smile
has been performed to wildly enthusiastic audiences. Thus, we now
know the line up of songs or cuts. I am borrowing from
PITCHFORK: DAILY MUSIC NEWS. They are getting their information
from a Beach Boys website, THE SMILE SHOP.
I am familiar with almost all the material, because I finally broke
down and bid on a bootleg. The bidding continued until 3AM in the
morning and $80.00 got me the CD.
What Brian did was put words to some instrumentals and made a trilogy
of songs.
This is the list:
OUR PRAYER/GEE/HEROES & VILLAINS/BARNYARD (DO YOU LIKE WORMS?
BICYCLE RIDER/ OLD MASTER PAINTER/YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE/CABINESSENCE
WONDERFUL/LOOK/CHILD IS THE FATHER OF MAN/ SURF’S UP
I’M IN GREAT SHAPE/WORKSHOP (I WANNA BE AROUND, FRIDAY NIGHTS)
VEGETABLES, HOLIDAY, WIND CHIMES/ MRS. O’LEARY’S COW/
I LOVE TO SAY DA-DA (WATER CHANT)/ GOOD VIBRATIONS
Long before I heard that Brian was going to return to his lost masterpiece,
originally started about 40 years ago, I made my own rendition as
did hundreds of other fans.
In fact, I made many renditions, but finally settled on the following.
One caveat here, I borrowed from many albums and wanted to make
sure that I did not use any bootleg material.
Thus, here is my last and final arrangement, pressed on a custom
CD by a very knowledgeable brother-in-law.
OUR PRAYER/HEROES& VILLAINS/COUNTRY AIR/FALL BREAKS AND BACK
TO WINTER/ LET THE WIND BLOW/ CABINESSENCE/WONDERFUL/GOOD VIBRATIONS
OLD MAN RIVER
MRS. O’LEARY’S COW, VEGETABLES, WIND CHIMES, COOL,
COOL WATER, SURF’S UP
YOU’RE WELCOME
Well I did violate my own rules with the fire cut, but on the whole,
I was able to construct what I saw as the first portion describing
the human condition and the second dealing with the elements of
the physical world. Further, I borrowed some cuts from Smiley and
Wild Honey.
At any rate, Brian came to my rescue. It is now over and its success
now indeed makes America’s band right up their with the Beatles
and the Stones.
We can all rest easier and go on with our lives. Will Brian ever
finish SMILE is now answered in the affirmative.
