THE SMILE ERA SESSIONS

the beach boys

(fantasy box set)

Box set includes the following:

CD 1  SMILE

CD 2  GOOD VIBRATIONS

This section includes the original   release, numerous alternatives, instrumentals , and the concert version from LIVE IN LONDON.

CD3  PET SOUNDS SESSIONS

This is essentially the Pet Sounds edition from 1990, along with chatter patter. There is a new cover without the San Diego zoo as Alan Jardine has complained. There is a green cover that replicates the Pet Sounds sessions cover.Stereo. Originals followed by medley of vocals only, and stack o’ tracks.

CD 4  SMILEY SMILE

The original cover and edition that was released in September of 1967.

CD 5  DESCENT

Sounds of fire, confusion, anomie, and angst. Much of this comes from Mrs. O’Leary’s cow as well as acid  laughter from SMILEY SMILE outakes. This CD causes controversy that argues about the genius/madness of the project. Consumers want to know what all this means.

CD 6  SMILE ERA SESSIONS

This is the formula offering. It includes 6 Top 40 hits that emerged during this era of 66-67. It is not the symphony to God, nor is it the acid album. It is an album to catch the best of that era. It is not a concept album, but a mass marketing CD that would interest casual fans. It begins with the breath taking, vocals only OUR PRAYER.  It is followed by 4 top 40 hits from that time period. They are: GOD ONLY KNOWS (#39), HEROES AND VILLAINS(#12), SLOOP JOHN B (#3), CABINESSENCE (DNC) GOOD VIBRATIONS(#1)  and WOULDN’T IT BE NICE(#8.)

The next 3 cuts are both mystical and commercially appealing. They are:

FALL BREAKS AND BACK TO WINTER, WIND CHIMES,  WONDERFUL. All of these versions were in the original SMILEY SMILE or 20/20. The last song is CAROLINE, NO (#32.)This is  followed by Banana and Louie (Brian’s dogs) barking and the sound effects of a distant train passing by. Running time is 30 minutes. Booklet is written by some one willing to endure potential conflict between  remaining band members.Cover of the box set is of clouds like those in the interior lining of the USA version of PERFECT HARMONY.
