SINGLE PAYER

Quinn, Jane Bryant (2004) “Our kindness of care deficit” NEWSWEEK, 11/8 p. 39

During 2002-2003 those under 65, 85.2 million did not have insurance during some part of that year. Administrative cost for American insurance is about one third of a trillion. Most uninsured are working poor such as waitresses, custodians and related.

Medicare in America has 1% costs for administration. Private insurers take 20%. Canada’s system is now under funded and less popular, but Canadians do not want American system. Only 1% come to the states to get care and they can use Canadians dollars to pay for part of the services.

Canadians have to wait 8 to 12 weeks for non-emergency
operations. A nurse’s aid will come to your home. Pain medications are readily available. You choose your own doctor.

Corporations do not pay insurance so those costs do not go into products. It is paid by all Canadians as individuals.

Care is rationed by price in USA and by need in Canada.

(Editors note: USA could form pool insurance by occupation or by state.)
