SEEKING ROBERT KENNEDY & MORE
HOLBROOKE (2006) FORIEGN AFFAIRS JULY/AUGUST. 170-176 Seeking Bobby Kennedy. Among many Americans there was a great loss after Robert Kennedy was assassinated. He was able to keep the 2 wings of the party together. After his death the hardliners , cold war warriors headed to Gov. Wallace and later to President Nixon. The anti-warriors headed to George Mc Govern. The rest is history. The Democratic party at this writing has lost the last 7 of 10 presidencies. Kennedy was anti-Vietnam war, but a cold warrior. He was also tough on crime. He was pro civil rights and women's issues. He had programs for the poor. If he had survived, it may have been the Humphrey -Kennedy ticket. The Democratic party needs to be anti-authoritarian left, and right including terrorism. The party should enter the world stage if in war using the Powell Doctrine. One should be cautious but ready to fight. In other words, the party should go to the right on international relations borrowing from George Bush 41 and left from the Liberal wing of John Kerry and Al Gore/ Bill Clinton. Two issues that appeared to be changed from the Supreme Court is abortion and affirmative action. If those issues recede and gun laws are left to the Right, Democrats can make moves for economic democracy and discrimination against most minorities.
