THE NEW REPUBLIC (2007) 5/7

CHAIT (18-26) The Right began to take over the Republican party with Barry Goldwater. From his election onward they kept getting stronger through organization that peaked with Ronald Reagan. Then it moved on through the Bushes. The second Bush is much more conservative than the first and had control of house, senate, white house, and now the supreme court. The author suggests that the Right has it right when it comes to winning. Once a week, there is a meeting with Grover Norquist at the helm. Everyone in the Right is on the same page. They disagree, but they remain loyal. A person like David Brock who wrote a neutral account of Hillary Clinton was thought to be disloyal and was banished. On the other hand, Progressives are all over the map. When you ask a Right wing think tank person what their role in the movement is they know exactly what to say. On the other hand, a Progressive would be troubled by that. Now NETROOTS

is beginning to evolve. Here is what they inherited. When you look at 68' Humphrey lost overwhelmingly to Nixon and Wallace. Most every election after that meant that the Democratic party kept moving to the right and kept losing. Only Carter and Clinton won as Eisenhower Republicans. NETROOTS wants to mimic the discipline on the right. They saw old Liberalism and the New Left go up in flames in the late 60's and they do not have a basic framework yet to work with. Old Liberals are divided and the country is basically conservative. However, if they can work on the basis of a moderately Liberal platform maybe it can work. HOWEVER, it took the Right at least a decade to get the whole movement going and it is still vibrant.

THE ECONOMIST (2007) 4/28

(31) Years ago, the supreme court in Brown vs. Topeka said that the USA is not a separate but equal school system. Some thought after the decision, that schools would be intergrated. That word integration is an old one as new words have come and gone and most schools are generally segregated. The latest case is one in which an attractive school has an opening in which a Black youngster has a chance to get in and a White youngster who lives in the neighborhood of this attractive school can not get in. It would appear that the supreme court as it is presently

constituted will reverse the decision and the White youngster will be the new student. Thus, maintaining racial balance essentially will die.
