PROTESTANT MAJORITY IS FADING

Cathy Lynn Grossman (2004) “Survey: USA’s Protestant Majority Might Soon Be No More” USA TODAY, 7/20, 1-3.

Years ago, FDR used to tell his staff of which there were many Catholics, Jews, and others, “think Protestant.” In other words, how would this policy affect the Protestant majority in America?

Things are changing.

Even back in 1993, Protestants were about 62% of church members (however nominal.) The backbone of the country was Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians, Anglicans, and the biggest of all Southern Baptists. Recently more have become Born Again Protestants.
Even if you factor in LDS (Mormons) by the end of 2004, Protestants will become a minority.

Roman Catholics remain flat in membership. Other world religions are growing, but small. This would also apply to eclectic churches like the Unitarians and others.

The biggest growth is among non-sectarians. They are believers or not, but they are growing and making big leaps among the young. The USA is the most religious country of all western democracies. However, more and more are becoming “otherists.” They have their beliefs, but may not have a holy book or holy building. They have their personal beliefs and want to be left alone. Some may watch television or go to a service on cable or the radio.

There is a silent revolution going on and numbers and identification appear to indicate that a number of people are seeking the divine personally.
