PSYCHOLOGY OF POWER
THE PSYCHOLOGY OF POWER THE ECONOMIST (2010) 1/29/ 75-76 A University in the Netherlands using appropriate research protocols, tested the hypotheses of Lord Acton that absolute power corrupts absolutely. After various strategies were conducted to help respondents feel more or less powerful they found that those who believed to be powerful gave themselves permission to commit a number illegalities. They felt that only the little people should pay taxes. On the other hand, the powerless were more likely not to forgive themselves and were quickly punished when they did so. Thus one of the foundations of power is hypocrisy. Not only do the powerful feel entitled, but they believe that others should be punished for what they did. In fact, the powerful deserve the best. What does the feds do and what does some private corporations do? 1.) There is wiretaps on all international calls. 2) creates profiles of average citizen not expected of crimes. 3) This is done without judicial oversight. 4.) Private companies turn over reams of information to security forces in the fed. 5.)You can also be followed because you may have on you a GPS in your cell phone or other technology. Numerous studies appear to indicate that it's not the content of your character, but the color of your skin. The darker the features, the more likely white folks feel anxious. What is not said is that Anglo features also help. So if you have a Yankee like nose and face, but are dark so use bleach crème and you are half way home. IF YOUR BLACK STAY BACK, IF YOUR BROWN STICK AROUND. ELVIS LIKED TEEN GIRLS. (44-45) Presley felt more comfortable around young girls than women. There were 3(all 14 years old) who lived in his hometown and prominent in the fan club. They all came over for pajama parties with him. Each would kiss him as the other two watched. This went on until late. He usually made advances to the point where the girls would ask him to stop which he did, but the advances became a regular part of the foursome. They finally had to leave, because he married 14 year old Priscilla Presley. OBAMA MERCHANDISE STILL SELLS BUT NOT LIKE A YEAR AGO. FOROOHAR, RANA Before the crash, the Neo Classical approach or Reagonomics prevailed. It assumed that the market automatically corrects itself. The no or few regulators were needed. That cutting taxes on the rich would trickle down to the masses. It was the same strategy or similar to the Hoover Administration before the crash of the 30's. Now the administrations of many countries appear willing to change or appear to want to look as if there has been changes. Other theories are the Social Democratic/Keynesian theory. They believe that markets do not automatically self correct, people are non-rational, taxes should be progressive, and that banks and other private producers cheat if they are not monitored. They believe that when there is a panic as readers witness just a year or so ago, you spend money on major economic institutions until folks begin to trust and also have the money to spend. Cell biology theory. In this view, the world economy is like an eco-system. If one part faces a crisis then other portions are affected or can come to the rescue of that part which is in trouble. Nueroeconomics. is behind behavioral economics. We do things in the market that are non-rational but seem to be okay in the long run. It is harder to stop a subscription of a good or service and let it ride then to stop with a lot of effort to do so. People may pick stores because of sentimental reasons even though they can get a better deal somewhere else. The new approach is also fighting to big to fail organizations. They should be busted up so if they fail, they fail and the rest of the society can adapt. Emphasis should be backed by real data and not abstract models. 52) if a terrorist captures your plane in the air. Here is what experts say you should do.
