OPPOSITES DON'T ATTRACT

Hadish, Cindy (2005) Opposites detract, THE GAZETTE, 2/15, 1A.

A new University of Iowa study indicates that marital bliss is based on a couple that has similar personalities. It was published in this issue of JOURNAL OF PERSONALITY AND SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY.

Similar personality traits like openess, conscientiousness, and agreeableness take time to unfold in a relationship. This variable appears to be even stronger than shared values, attitudes, and religion.

This finding appears to contradict with commonsense that opposites attract. It also may sully the theory of complimentary need.

The findings were also discussed on NBC's TODAY SHOW.
