NUCLEAR POWER, IS IT SAFE?

Thompson, Mark (2005) Are these towers safe? TIME, 6/20, 36-48.

A tightly held NRC document reviewed by TIME raises serious questions about whether the government has set the security bar too low. Thus terrorist can easily overwhelm security and flip the necessary switch to go to final melt down.

Security needs to be immensely increased and a new technology to reverse the final switch should be in operation. The attractiveness of nuclear power is that it does not generate heat to cause global warming. On the other hand, the spent fuel could be upset as a train carries the material from wherever to the deserts of Nevada.

Additionally, once melt down starts it can kill up to 50,000 people in the surrounding area. Wall Street is not excited about nuclear power as it is not a real profitable undertaking. However, numerous locations in the USA are willing and desire a nuclear power plant. Constructing the plant generates local revenue and having the plant is a long term financial benefit.

The issue is important as nuclear power may be resurrected and the clean fuels like biomass, solar and wind are but a tiny part of the energy force.

Coal may be a better alternative as it is safer and the US has lots of it. However, it generates heat although that has been reviewed in terms of improvement.
