NO COMMUTE CORPORATION & OTHER ESSAYS
BUSINESS WEEK (2006) 12/ 11
60-68/ CONLIN
Best Buy is a no commute corporation for its management. It started as a sub rosa venture. Top management heard about it and improved upon it. With Best Buy, you come and go when you please. There are no fixed schedules, no mandatory meetings, or related. On the other hand, you are always on call. You attach your cell phone to your body and computer must be able to send faxes and other forms of work by e-mail. If you like to work early or late or go fishing, it doesn't matter as long as you are willing to stop what you are doing and do administrative task over the cell phone. Your goal is to be the best at making good choices for the company and delivering your output on time and beyond the going rate. Millions are saved when folks don't come to work. Office space can be minimized. Concern about parking can be reduced. If you don't have to be there, what are you doing there? Conference calls replace committee meetings. Essentially, the clock is smashed, but responsibility and accountability is increased. It is not for everyone. Some are overwhelmed with just starting and must move on. As all your activity is recorded, skating through a job is not acceptable and job termination is in the cards. If you ever took a distance learning class and failed to get started, this is not a job for you.
46/ IHLWAN Cram schools in Korea are changing. They are making learning less stressful , but it must be just as hard as before. Cram schools are necessary as a strategic test is given during late high school and one's entire life rides on how one does on the examination. Teachers who can produce new technology that can keep scores up with morale can make millions. Most teachers do not do this. A cram school may have hundreds of students so you must be able to stimulate and produce at the same time. 71/ WOYKE There is a new DPlay that will compete with retail outlets, films send to your home on DVD, cable rent movies, and related. In this new business strategy, it is like E-Bay, you see a movie or a book and you rent it, and it is shown on your computer. However, technology is now gearing the computer to be sent a signal to your television. So you can see the movie on a bigger screen. Unlike cable rental, where you call in or make your choice from your remote, this systems allows for literally thousands of movies that you may have missed and small independents that never made to your town or city. Further, books can be sent through this system too. You pay through Pay Pal. 106/ GREEN The AK-47 rifle is the best killer rifle in the world. It was created in the Soviet Union and now is all over the world. Numerous countries have copied it. Where the US M-16 needs to kept tidy and clean, the AK-47 does the job. Best of all, kids can use it very effectively. So you have children as soldiers and they can compete against adults. The AK-47 can fire more rapidly and efficiently than any other rifle on earth. It is the most effective killer of them all. You can dig them out of the mud and they still work great. In just about every news story of many killings, you can count on the AK-47 being the weapon of choice.
NEWSWEEK (2006) 12/11
46-48/ SETOODEN
Barbie the doll is getting lots of competition from Bratz the real doll. She is shorter, less skinny, and has smaller breast. In fact, she looks like a real girl. She is attractive and as a role model, she is some one that little girls can feel comfortable. She does not need to die of anorexia or have big bust implants that give her backaches all the time.
12/11/ 51/ SAMMUELSON The dollar is getting weak. At this web site, we told you so. You can only borrow so long and creditors around the world start getting worried and they may dump their dollars. So if the dollar goes weak, the Feds steps in and allows for galloping inflation which gets rid of the debt and most peoples savings or there is a depression. The super rich prefer a deep recession to speeding inflation. In many parts of the world, the dollar is the currency of all currencies. However, in the last 6 years, we have been told that debts don't matter. Also, we have been paying bunches of money for letting imports outrank exports so that there is a huge imbalance in trade. We import more than we export. Further, if the USA debt goes south, the economies of the world are so interdependent that we start taking other countries with us down into the toilet. Since November 20, 2006, there has been a 4% drop in the dollar compared to the euro. If someone starts talking about another tax cut, you know it's going to hurt you and your kids and your grandkids.Long ago, some one told you that you have to keep more than you spend and it was valid. It has only been since the 80's that the folks at the top said that you could have it all and not pay for it. The big tax cutters have some trouble coming their way.
62-63/ MILLER Magnet therapy seems to help those with severe depression that can not be helped with medications and or shock therapy. The magnet therapy is not as disruptive as shock therapy and systematic TMS appears to help about 31% of those treated in removing ALL the symptoms. Why does it work? It is suggested that it increase blood flow and perfects the dance between the firing signal of the axons and dentrites. So the synapse is improved and one's mood improves. The magnet treatment pulse rapidly about one inch into the brain and stimulates it.
74-75/ MILLLER Super bacteria is back. After World War II, medicine became euphoric about killing off bacteria with antibiotics. However, the bacteria did not die, it adapted to become stronger and stronger. So now comes super bugs that kill. We are not there yet, but we are getting close. Some people will die from the super bugs. In fact, my mother did. It took about 30 days to kill her. When I last saw her, she was about 60 pounds and near death. After I said good bye, she died within a few days. 110/ QUINDLEN About 3,000 people die from malnutrition in this country. Money for hunger has been cut. There have been some private charities that have done a really good job, but we need more help. Please don't count on the Feds doing anything about it. |
