MEDICAL GUESWORK AND OUTSOURCING

Dr. David Eddy is both an MD in cardiovascular surgery and a PhD in Math. He is not a popular fellow. His approach to medicine is "evidenced based." That means how do the surgery or strategy

used on a patient compare to other surgeries and strategies?. Using a particular research model, his findings suggest that American doctors as  a whole over- do their medical procedures. You have a heart attack? An angioplasty is now generally better and safer than a by-pass. However, there are exceptions and this is where the professionalism of the doctor is appropriate. On balance, Eddy is of the persuasion that less is more. So is insurance companies and related. Eddy suggests that medical doctors do not look at how effective it is but how they were mentored. There are a few who would lose a great deal of money if they would change procedures.

Those with limited insurance are now looking to go outside the country for expensive surgery.

As an example, as discussed above a by-pass costs$122,000 to $176,000 . In India, it is $10,000. The procedure is the same.
