INCARCERATION OF ALL COLORS OF AFRICAN-AMERICANS
SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN notes that roughly one in five or 20% of the 212, 000,000 whites in the USA have some African descent. Thus African-Americans come in many colors including black, brown, tan, olive, and white. THE DRUG POLICY ALLIANCE notes that both female and male Blacks constitute roughly half the population of inmates in American prisons. Although Blacks constitute about 35 million people in the USA the incarceration rate is about 5 to 6 times that of Whites. Why this occurs is subject to debate. In this instance, I took 20% of the white population and merged it with the Black population. That was for the denominator. Then in the numerator and I added 20% to the incarcerated Black offenders. What I discovered is that the 5 to 6 times rate of incarceration is cut nearly in half. In other words, the rate of incarceration of Blacks is about 3 times that of Whites. That is a considerable drop. I want to add a disclaimer here. The numbers were not standardized, nor were White incarcerated randomized. Racist could argue that Whites with Black heritage over represent Whites in prison. However, roughly the incarceration rate was cut in half. Imagine if we took rates of numerous other activities about Blacks and added White Africans? Numerous statistics would probably change. In terms of crime, my guess is that White Africans (White on the outside and partially Black on the inside) would be reduced in terms of “racial profiling.” Further, White Africans are more likely not to be located in Black communities because they can “pass.” This does not mean that I don’t want apprehension of crime when it occurs. It does mean that officer’s on the spot disposition MAY be different. THE DRUG POLICY ALLIANCE notes that more proportionally more Blacks are incarcerated in the USA when compared to the once apartheid South Africa. The populations were standardized so it is statistically possible that smaller South Africa can be compared to the USA’s large population. The difference is the American Blacks are incarcerated about 4.5 times greater than South African Blacks. One of the major questions is does “Blackness” genetically correlate with crime. I suggest that this is not the case. |
