Sullivan (2006) TIME/ 3/13/ 72 ______(2006) THE WEEK/3/10/ 17
Prominent conservative Andrew Sullivan states that he regrets the decision that he made to commit troops to Iraq. First, he names other conservatives that feel the same way or similiar ways to him. He then states that he based his initial position on the following: 1) the shock of 9/11 flavored his decision as well as the ease of the winning of the cold war 2) the power of American might sullied his perception of the problems of a long drawn out land war and the current administration sent too few troops and were not prepared for post invasion 3) neo-conservatives misread how hard it is to change a culture. He also sees a positive future from the mistake made in the present. THE WEEK summarizes a poll of American soldiers in Iraq. Nearly 72% want to get out of Iraq within the next year. If that is the case, what should be done? The poll does not tell us, but it may be that a small band of American troops could be located there to run the oil fields and protect them from say Iran. However, this is just a guess from myself. I do not have a military strategy background even though I took 6 years of ROTC years and years ago. |
