IRAN & OTHER ESSAYS
FORIEGN AFFAIRS (2006) SICK 11/12 / 142 Although Iran is appearing ever more powerful, the theocratic state is deeply divided and financially strapped. The pronouncement of its secular leader are not the same as the ayatollahs. Thus, we are not sure where Iran stands and what to do with the country. We do believe that they are supplying troops to Iraq and that they have been able to score diplomatic and military coups as the states stumble in the Iraq war. Sick suggests that the new generation raised more on religious training than anything else is ready to move toward Western values. Theocracies don't work except at the end of a barrel of a gun. . If the young can get a hold of the internet, all bets are off. Iran is so difficult to surmise. KORB & OGDEN (2006) 11/12 152 G. I.'s or Jets? That is a very tough question for America's volunteer army of today. Ideally, in terms of war, if the U.S. could use technology, the states could bomb many countries into submission. However, it appears that it is the Colin doctrine all over again. Technology is used only at first to shock and awe. Then troops enter. However, there has to be a massive force. Or, as in Iraq, the enemy falls back waits for the right time an sporadically attacks at will. It is like a hammer fighting a swarm of bees. The first stage of war is to overwhelm, then contain, followed by pacification, and then gradual release. Powell used overwhelming force, secured the area (containment) and then got Iraq out of another country. Left troops behing to pacify and left. To answer this question, we need more troops, not technology. However, less people want to join the army and the draft for a war does not work. Hiring troops from other countries or from private corporations is possible, but not available at this time. If we go into further wars, the U.S. needs a grand coalition with a well thought out plan. There is a battle for global values. To simplify things. On one side is moderate Muslims, Christians, and numerous others. On the other is radical Muslims. It is a question of modernity and post modernity from the West and pre-modernism from the Muslim world. Although we believe in democracy and capitalism or moderate socialism, the radical Muslim is opposed to all that. However, we can not be pleased with some Western values that are free to operate but are offensive to many. On the other hand, radical Muslims can use our weakness to strengthen their case. We must expose to the world, what life is like under radical Muslim control. BUSINESS WEEK (2007) 2/12 14) We need more crank up radios for the masses. Further, during the 50's and 60's nearly all of white America got richer even if they stayed in place. What happened? The changes are: 1) the economy changed beginning in the 70's. For all, wages stagnated. For men, they declined.2) College degree became a requirement, but not a guarantee of middle class. Most 4 year colleges dramatically increased in price. 3.) As the economy changed, Conservatives sat on it. Money to go to school beyond high school dramatically slowed down.
