INEQUALITY IN AMERICA

_______(2006) THE ECONOMIST/ 6/23/13-14

America's inequality is not wrong as long as there is room for the talented at the  bottom to move up. Bush tax cuts for the rich and the lack of a GI bill and its equivalents does not help mobility.

Americans need to rethink their model, because if the rich remain rich and the rest suffer, political and social stability are sure to occur. Although the statistics look good for Yanks, only 25% approve of the economy. More funds need to be directed at education so that the bottom and the middle can move up. According to this conservative periodical, it is fine that the ladder of social mobility has been stretched, but some of the rungs are missing.

Pethokoukis/ U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT/ 6/26/ 42-44.

Folks don't like the economy even though it is in great to good shape. What is the problem? This conservative newsmagazine says its that Americans are afraid of losing their jobs. They may have worked hard, played by the rules, and have the credentials. However, their jobs can still be outsource if they are in the middle class or replaced by Hispanic immigrants if they are the working poor.

This fear does not help when the CEO is rewarded for dumping decent working people in the states and the corporation awards him or her with a big bonus that makes the leader 400 to 550 times richer. One of the experts suggests a universal wage insurance that covers workers whose jobs have been outsourced and can last for an extended period of time. This is not disability pay or

unemployment insurance. Health benefits should also be portable..
