HOW WE GET ADDICTED

TIME (2007) JULY 16/ 42-46.

Lemonick (42-46)

If sufficiently exposed, we can all become drug and alcohol addicts. However, some are genetically predisposed and they have the worst cravings. The biggest addiction is caffeine, followed by alcohol, drugs, tobacco, food, gambling, shopping, sex and the internet.

Most if given early in life can become a lifetime issue. An example is sex. If a child is sexually abused, they are likely to become sexually promiscuous or strictly asexual.

For most, whatever the addiction, the lower mammalian portions of the brain over ride the pre-fontal

cortex that deals with  ethics, reasoning, and morals. MRI's are likely to show that a normal person has a pre-frontal cortex that is bright and healthy. A heavy cocaine user does not show a vibrant

pre-frontal cortex. 100 days after withdrawal the pre-frontal begins to emerge again.

VIGABATARIN an anti-epilepsy medication shows promise in keeping more of a inhibitory

compound can be stored in the nerve cells. When a drug enters, the compound is release that says stop or moderate. The drug is not sold in the United States, but if it works it may apply to many addictions. Socially, the best thing that can happen is to be with other people who share the same desire to quit or not start over. That is AA or a similiar organization. Depending on a higher power also helps a great deal.

BEDBUGS

Vollard ( 53-54) Look bedbugs do not carry any deadly bacteria. They are bothersome. Get a professional and follow their directions. They usually have to spray a number of times and

then most or all are gone. You can reach a tipping point whenand if you feel one, you get it in the morning. The same applies to ticks which I get when I had a camper in the woods. Both are usually non-lethal.  So New York city is having a terrible time with the problem, if you get it. It is a workable problem working with a professional.

Wilson (30) A new study suggests that folks generally truthfully represent themselves

in places like MYSPACE and FACEBOOK.

WEAPONIZED HAMBURGERS

Begley (49) Most of the food in America unfortunately is not inspected. Thus, you must cook everything that you can. However, why don't the terrorist use food to kill some of us?

Terrorism is built on building fear not conquering at least at first. So when they start poisoning just enough food in selected places all over the country.then we can fear OR  we could get more food inspectors and turn down food from suspect countries. We can also relearn how to catch

rotten food. Food inspection has been a bother to this administration, but if it becomes part of

the fight on terrorism, we could be in better shape.

THE ECONOMIST (2007) 7/7

CLITORIS

(47)  What do you do when your 10 or 11 year old daughter starts getting sexual feelings,

you cut off the clitoris. The operation costs about $9.00. Once she survives, she still has feelings but there is not a lot she can do about it. That makes a good wife. She won't cheat.

In Egypt, the medical community has been talking about stopping the operation completely.

Today, it is becoming possible that the surgery may diminish at least in the more secular areas of the nation. However, the ECONMIST is not too hopeful.
