GREEDY GUTS & OTHER THINGS
BUSINESS WEEK (2007) 1/6
_______(64-65)
Why are we getting fatter? Here is another new theory. We are getting heavier and chunkier because the necessary bacteria in our stomachs is working too well. For both mice and humans, obese folks have a more efficient bacteria to unlock bacteria for energy than lean folks. For mice that have been able to colonize certain bacteria that come from fat and lean mice. The result? There is a turnaround. Why results appear to be subtle. Original weight determines weight reduction and change in microbes, not the other way around. It may take awhile to tease out the data, but combining microbes could reduce weight. Could it also help anorexia? Can't say. ______(65) Hypoxia is the lack of oxygen to the brain or cells. This author experience 5 hours without the necessary oxygen in a quadruple by pass. The result? Memory problems as well as spelling difficulties. On the other hand as this is being written, I have had the opportunity to live 11 more years. Ideally, one would like to go to intensive care wards to test the impacts of hypoxia. However, it is a sure way to kill an ailing patient. Thus, a new study will be done on normal healthy individuals who are mountain climbers and a more likely to encounter hypoxia. Their vitals are measured at sea level and on the mountain top to see the difference and damage done by hypoxia. ______(66) What is the logic of privacy. As an example, you are shopping at a super and you are being taped for potentially trying to steal food. Then at the cash register, all your information of purchases along with demographics and zip code are sold to someone else.Is that right? A new group of scientist is trying to determine "contextual integrity." What is fair to gain from a person and is fair to sell to outside parties. How does the potential for criminality and terrorism involved here? ______(66) Bats are good for agriculture.
______(69) Lack of tidiness can have a serendipity effect and is no more costly than tidiness. However, if some big item is lost in the mess, all bets are off.
TIME, 1/15
Carlabresi (49-50) An ex-con is the premier blogger behind the concerns about e-voting. His major one is the e-vote that is paperless. How do you do a recount without some paper trail. Further, he was the mastermind behind top computer scientists get a hold of a new Diebold machine and tearing it apart for its weakness. Unfortunately, his blogs are partially accurate and contain some bullshit.
Dell (52) Wi-Fi may be coming to your town. It is great to be hooked up to a lot of things and get good broad band. There are now 300 municipalities that have it. Further. others know what you are watching on the telly and can block out adult stations. There is a growing competition between wi-fi and cable. Some don't like that last station. Walsh (56) Big business is going green, because it is good business. Ferguson (60) Are you worried about the dollar dropping screwing up the world? If you are a fan of chaos theory ( little subtle things can mean a lot) than this is for you. An assination in 1914 ( the killing of Ferdinand) did not do anything. The market yawned. Then, two sides emerged about the whole thing and it scared the liquidity of the big bankers and we ultimately headed into war. The dollar also crashed.
Holding (62) Are you an anti-spammer? You get e-mails to lengthen your male genital even if you are a female. How about a sex stimulant or porn? Do you want to fight spammers? Good luck, the law is on the side of spammers and they will sue you.
U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT, 1/15 J. P.(66) The dollar is going to rebound. You will be hearing more of that as the dollar struggles in the world market. See Financialsense.com for the other side. ___(70) The housing market is still in a slump. The next bubble may be far away. That is the usual pattern. |
