NEW REPUBLIC (2007) 1/22

Glazer (9-10)

Seymour Lipset died. He was from the big apple and went to CCNY. He decided to go into sociology because he thought he could get a job in social work. He ended up as one of the premier sociologists. His doctoral dissertation was why there was no socialist party in the United States. Yes, there were little parties, but they did not represent much. To finish his dissertation, he went to North Dakota with a questionnaire as well as other field research models and took a look. Saskatchewan, where the NPD or the Socialist party flourished. The socialism in Canada means

Social Democratic Socialism. Theat means that most all the property was privately owned

but the benefits were generous to all (socialism.) Over the border, North Dakota was rock ribbed conservative. Why? After looking at numerous variables, he finally came to the conclusion that Americans had a strong individualist streak and that they hated their government. So? A laissez form of capitalism or variations were the choices among the two parties.

Lipset would bring a lunch to school and eat with NATHAN GLAZER, PETER ROSSI,

PHILLIP SELZNICK and others. They were a Left wing crowd that became Liberals in the days

after college. CCNY was the most inexpensive college in the area and most took the trolley to get to school. There were no dorms or greek houses. At least not for these folks who had very little, but became very prominent sociologists .ROBERT MERTON was also a teacher there.

Zengerle (13-19)

John Edwards the vice presidential candidate in 04' with John Kerry has come into his own

according to this author. This time around he is working with unions, blue collars, and  poor.

These are the forgotten folks of the Democratic party. He seems to be a good fit. He should be a significant challenge to Hillary and Barry (Obama) in the Iowa primary. If he goes to their Left, he must then trek back to the center in the general election. It should be a hard go, because so many

are now in the field for both parties. At this writing, there are 26 candidates.

THE NEW REPUBLIC (2006) 1/12

_________(27-28)

Universal health care is coming to Massachusetts and California. They have proposed by

Republican governors. What is happening is that health care has become so expensive that

2 states are trying to cover the situation for those that do not have coverage. The biggest expense is that the poor end up in the emergency room which is very expensive. Their programs are not that much different from Hillary Clinton's in the early 90's. However, this time around, it is Republican venture in a conservative country. If it works, is yet to be seen. Hillary care was mocked and so these plans may be also.

_________(53-54)

There are second thoughts about Israel as the promised land for many American and European

Reform and Conservative Jews. Israel is now a dangerous place to live and it is surrounded by

walls and moats. They quickest way to die as a Jew is to live in Israel. Now some Jews think in terms of Jewish ness and Judaism as a state of mind rather than a place. The same area in and around Israel is also the home of Muslim and Christians. Or for some Christians, it is Rome.

Something is going on and the survival of Israel may be based on land to visit rather than a nation continually under attack.

________(72)

In a content analysis of English literature, references of female bodies appear to support a roughly two-thirds ratio of waist to hips. However, evolutionary psych also suggests that bosoms, weight (heavy women were popular) and other minutia were not cross cultural. What seems to support the theory are that men appear to be simple and predictable when looking at women.

_______(73)

Economics assumes humans are rational. However, numerous studies suggest that folks are non-r atonal with money (not irrational.) One of the latest data to support the non-rationality of humans is the credit card. In nueroeconommics using a fM RI, the credit cards blunts that part of the brain that is most concerned with costs and getting a good deal.
