| FUTURE:
NO WHERE TO HIDE Levy, Steven (2004) “A Future With Nowhere to Hide?” NEWSWEEK, June 7, p.76 We are constantly getting connected at times without knowing it. ECHELON and CARNIVORE are words that drive privacy advocates crazy. Given the proper clearances any body can listen to anybody else when they talk on the phone. Project ECHELON has the potential to listen to anyone. DIGICLICK can monitor every website that you have been to. Now with Wi-Fi wireless computer system, you probably won’t have any place to hide. By 2005, all handsets will have GPS monitoring system build within them. This is in compliance with the FCC “E911” mandate. WORKTRACK is one of a number of systems used for employer-employee relationships. In the scheme of things, “tracking” will probably be highly popular and voluntary. Parents can check on their kids. Parolees can be monitored. Lost loved ones can be found. It is after the honeymoon with this technology that come “location based services” that can get you people as fast as FEDEX. The third phase is the “location privacy.” Some times you would just like to get lost in a park, woods, or night spot. It could be called “spying with maps” as you are located. This makes a more visible and efficient system than what is already on the internet. Hackers can read all your e-mails and related. If you know just a bit about a person, you can get their address, phone number, and data on their private life, work history, debts, and all other public records. Further, there are maps showing where you live as well as photo satellite pictures of you and how old you are. This technology is either here or will be here soon. Where all the data
goes and who stores it is also controversial, so you may want to check
out your favorite search engines to see what there is on there about
yourself. Trying googling yourself and see what happens. |
