DOES THE FUTURE BELONG TO CHINA?

Zakaria, Fareed (2005) Does the future belong to China? NEWSWEEK, 5/9, 29-36.

Eighty percent (80%) of Wal-Mart suppliers are from China. The country has moved from command socialism (communism) to command capitalism (fascism.) Although their machinery and industrial plants are not energy efficient they have a vast supply of cheap workers who can make products that are good and profitable for American suppliers and retailers.

In the meantime, they have moved 300 million out of poverty and quadrupled the average person’s income. Further, the Chinese banks rollover on loans so that the business setting is quite good.

On the other hand, life in China remains about the same. Many would rather live in Scandinavia, Europe or the UK/USA.
