DOES COSBY HELP?

Cose, Ellis (2004) “Does Cosby help?” NEWSWEEK, P.66-69.

Bill Cosby makes the point that street culture in the ghetto will keep Black males in jail, in prison, in trouble or in a casket. They leave behind fatherless kids and dead end lives.

As Robert Merton in his opportunity theory is that Black males want material success, but believe that it is beyond their reach. By the early 80’s it wasn’t cool to go to school.
Being angry and street smart is better than acknowledging that one is dumb. If one answers too many questions successfully in class, they have a chance to get beat up after school.

Street culture has become confused with black identity dooming many to live in the slums.

Cosby is trying to make a new crusade. He needs help. There are programs. However, they are few, not recognized, and not funded.
