SCOTMAN.COM reports that one of the most famous living generals Colin Powell is Scottish or Scotch African.

Powell who is a 4 star general and George W. Bush’s secretary of state is officially
Scottish. A representative of the HERALDRY SOCIETY OF SCOTLAND will present a certification with a coat of arms recognizing Powell as a Scotsman later this year. Only about 120 to 150 coats of arms are awarded each year.

Although Secretary of State Powell’s parents hail from Jamaica, Colin’s mother (Maud McCoy) has heritage that traces back to Scotland. The society accepts those from Scotland directly or through the United States when the country was a colony.

Scotland appears proud to have Powell as its honorary citizen.

Many in America, as well as the rest of the world are exploring their genealogy. This is extremely crucial for those with African descent. Sub-Saharan Blacks were forcibly taken from their homelands of desert and tropical Africa in a Diaspora known more for sorrow than advancement. Enslaved, chained to the steerage, and packed into ships, many grew up in slavery and died as slaves. Following their servitude, most have lived segregated lives in numerous countries throughout the world.

For the United States, SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN notes that a little over 20% of Anglo-Whites have African heritage. Further 70% of Blacks have white heritage. Unfortunately, the mixture of the two races came from forced relations between white slave masters and black slave girls. Although that was not always the case.

Those numbers begin to add up. In the USA, twenty percent of white folks draw upon black heritage. Roughly one fifth of those listed in the census as White constitute 232 million Americans. Thus about 46 million Whites have Black heritage and approximately 70% of Blacks have White heritage. With the Black population at roughly 32 million, that too constitutes up to 23 million.

Now, do the math. 23 million and 46 million is 69 million out of an official population of 288 million. If you round to the nearest easy to recognize percentage, nearly one in four folks have bi-racial heritage. To use slave terminology, one in four people in the USA at present is Black. Some have brown or tan skin color and others have white skins.

Powell is one of a mighty force and his recognition give rise of pride to people of Africa regardless of their skin color and features. Not only is he recognized but he is honored.
