CRUMBLING COLLEGE CAMPUS LIFE/ PARTY ON!
Barrett Seaman returns to campus. Seamen graduated from Hamilton College in 1967, and now he returns as a non-traditional student. What does he find? The book is meant for parents. (BINGE, WILEY, 2005) Seaman finds that professors are hard to find except in class. Otherwise, they are hard at work doing grants and publications. Alcohol has replaced hard drugs for students. Living together has been replaced by one night stands. School days are shortened to a 4 day week. Revealing clothing is put aside for nudity. Someone might ask anyone for hard core porn. Seaman a TIME magazine editor acknowledges that much of this has been going on for years. It is just qualitatively worse. Date rape is up. Minority students trying to assimilate are down. Mental illness is up as is grade inflation . Hitting the library is down. So, he suggests that professor spend more time with students. Establish some rules. Here is my suggestion. Send them to a community college. They take attendance, test often, and many live at home the first 2 years. What students won’t say is that if the school does not party, then students move to where there is an ongoing party. Students want grade inflation. They want anything that compliments a party life style. Seaman attended the top 12 elite colleges and universities and discovers these journalistic findings. However, it appears that he is on the mark. He also assumes that the behavior of the elite drifts down to the middle and bottom. Maybe. However, if you want a good time, it’s at the top. You can also get herpes with that undergrad degree.
