CRAIGSLIST.ORG is where you find a lot of things that you can’t find anywhere else. Craig Newmark started his site when he found that most search engines didn’t have those unusual things that one might be looking for. He sent out a list of e-mails asking friends about boutiques, special liquors, and you name it. They returned a gush of material. He started little and as advertisers gravitated to his site, he stayed little in a big way. Little guys can still advertise.

Craigslist goes to 34 countries, 175 cities, and 1.5 billion people a month. It drew 10 million in revenue each year.

Don’t know how much he makes, but he is not going to tell you and he lives quietly. He has his own blog and will pay for good investigative journalism.

In other words, he is a nice guy in a gilded age of jaded captains of sea. He warrants a full page in BUSINESS WEEK.
