THE COMEBACK KIDS
THE ECONOMIST (2007) 10/6
THE COMEBACK KIDS 27-28
THE ECONOMIST (BritishConservative Magazine)thinks that the Clintons are the most likely to get into the white house in 2008. She has high negatives, but high positives. If the Republicans run Giuliani that may be different, but he is not the campaigner she is .However, Guiliani probably has the clearest shot if he can get through the primaries. The Republican party wins most presidential elections. This is especially true since 1968. Both Clintons have lots of baggage, but the 90’s were VERY GOOD TIMES. The Clintons were smart to pick Robert Rubin as their Secretary of Treasury and were in good stead with the Fed Chairman. Both the tax increase of Bush 41’ and the one on the rich with Clinton put the dollar in good shape. In 7 years the dollar is in bad shape and even the Capitalist community wants Democrats because they can’t stand the Religious Right.
BUSINESS WEEK (2007) 10/29 ELGIN 45-52 NEWSWEEK (2007) 10/22 WILL 68
LITTLE GREEN LIES (ELGIN) AN INCONVENIENT PRICE (68)
BUSINESS WEEK notes that those closest to industry know that most companies are going green in their advertisements and investing a small amount of money to green projects. Further, YOU CAN MAKE MORE MONEY without going green. When you advertise, It is just as cost effective to say something green right now as not. It is also prudent to advertise about the green projects. HOWEVER, in the end, green will go away like it did in the 70’s. It is easier to ride it out. Vice President Gore should get the awards that he has won, but the severity of global warming is not that bad and can be forgotten by the masses. At least that is the premise of the anti-greens.
In 1968, Paul Ehrlich produced a best seller called the POPULATION BOMB. It was preceded by THE SILENT SPRING, both called for cleaning up the environment and having fewer children. What happened? Soon, things went the other way, life moved on and the planet is polluted and has 6 billion people. Further Paul Ehrlich made symbolic bets with the late Julian Simon that certain minerals would run out in the 80’s. It did not happen. So the environmental movement essentially lost.
This time, Julian Simon has been replaced by Bjorn Lomberg. In his new book, THE SKEPTICAL ENVIRONMENTALIST GUIDE TO GLOBAL WARMING, he says is that global warming is real, but that it is not that bad. Further, he provides a number of stats and related reasoning that in 2100, the ocean will have another 1 foot of water. There will be less land mass. We can slow things down a bit and make things a bit better, but that’s it. It cost too much. The USA won’t do it. Developing countries won’t do it and the ruling classes of all the countries in the world will find that pollution and global warming makes quality of life worse, but one can still make large profits. Further, if you go green, your competitor will not and your corporation will be out. Most socialism won’t do any better. Socialist smoke is just as bad as capitalist smoke.
So, one can hope that the future will be less bad than doing nothing at all. Global warming is just too expensive and it may mean that industrial and post industrial societies can not be harnessed in terms of a different quality of life. Further, people adapt, go to higher land where it does not flood and it does have drought all the time. Then there is the old bromide, there may be a technological fix that makes pollution and warming go away or is highly reduced.
In the mean time, do green things if only for your benefit as your contribution to the earth. It may slow things down a bit.
What we have with Lomburg is the reality that Gore is right that GLOBAL WARMING is here and it is negative. What we don’t have is the extreme effort it would take to fix global warming. As an example, the southwest may be full of drought for long, long periods of time, but there may be a new domesticated crop that grows with little water as possible. Further, if there is desalinated water, it may be profitable for cities. Additionally, who says that you to have a green grass yard?
PHARMA REPS AS DRUG DEALERS
UNDERWOOD (48)
Although it is small, a growing number of medical doctors are no longer seeing drug detailers or pharmacy sales persons or taking their gifts. Big Pharma has discovered that even little gifts and personal contact with the doctor can sway them to write scripts for a new drug, when an old generic will do just as well. Further, the new drugs have not gone through the real test where thousands take the drug and a number die.
ODDS AND ENDS
THE WEEK (2007) 10/19 AND 10/26 10/19 10/ROBERT REDFORD ON POLITICS He did 2 movies on politics hoping that the public would get interested in what was happening and perhaps vote. It didn’t happen. THE CANDIDATE and ALL THE PRESIDENT’S MEN were about the dark side of politics. He discovered that the public doesn’t like darkness or complexity nor do they like politics. Further, he discovered that sworn enemies in public, when the cameras are off become the best of friends. It is just a game. He discovered that when he was invited to the KENNEDY CENTER in 2005 to receive an honor.
