CARS THAT SWIM

THE ECONOMIST (2007) 9/14

12/   The Aquada is the name for a new 3 seater car that drives on the streets and acts as a boat

It almost planes the water at incredibly high speeds. 100,000 will be built next year. Driving at

110 miles per hour, it doesn't take long for this car-boat or auto-boat to cross the English

Channel. This English auto-boat is downright attractive for both the water and the street. Is it new?

Yes and No. It is new for this time period and for this century, but way back in the last century,

these car boats were built, but did not sell. So this time around it may be a big ht.

The price was not discussed.

AARP (2007) September

Yep. You are right. We are re segregating in the United States along racial lines. 50 years after Little Rock school crisis, we are heading downward. The highest point was 1975 through 1980. After the 80's to date, we are right back where we were in 1970's. It also continues to go downward. With the new Supreme Court rulings, neighborhood schools means that kids in that neighborhood go there. No outsiders allowed. It all makes sense because the neighborhoods are highly segregated. Except for some really rich and poor neighborhoods, neighbor hoods are very segregated and thus so with the schools. So inadvertently, if a Black moves in an all white neighborhood, and then a few more Blacks move in, there is white flight. It just didn't work out, but that does not mean that it will never work out. Yes, I have Black neighbors and Black family

members. If it can happen in my family, it might happen in others.

BUSINESS WEEK ( 2007) 9/17

Javers  56-59/  Conservative BUSINESS WEEK reveals that Army and Navy contractors

get extra money through earmarks. After the official budget is established, lobbyist seek more

and it pays off. For 1 dollar of lobby money the contractors receive 30 dollars in return. That is a nice investment. The nearly 30 to 1 ratio is just short of incredible. There is one better and that is Alaska.

U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT (2007) 9/17

Tolson  38/  In a new study, there appears to be a generation gap between adult Jews and their

children. They like Israel, but not to the same extent as their parents or those who marry within the faith. A key ingredient is that those Jews of many different demographics feel closer to Israel if they visit the country.

TIME (2007) 9/17

Pinker  52-53/  You say that you want to hear people  be truthful and speak plainly. In other words, no one has to be a phony. YOU DON'T REALLY MEAN. IT. Most of the research findings indicate that if folks are really honest, it hurts like hell. Perhaps, they like you, but they don't like your haircut, or what you have on or something else. You want to hear what you want to hear.

Plain speaking is not what it is cracked up to be.

THE WEEK (2007)  9/14

40-41/ They are the forgotten players of the NFL. Some are dirt poor. Why? They are paralyzed. They have severe brain damage. They have busted knees. There is a growing movement to insure players after they quit or tossed out to keep them going until they die. Some have profound

depression from the concussion. Others have clouded thinking.  The lucky ones leave the game

but they don't leave the pain. It is with them for the rest of their lives. Outside of a few top players, the big profits don't go the players, but to the owners.
