NEWSWEEK used a number of criteria to get their top 100. It is hard to tell given the names of the schools but most appeared to be public and from the east and west coast.
The Midwest was overwhelmingly not present on the list. The one listed is Summer Academy ranked # 75 in Kansas City, Missouri.

By the name, it sounds like a private school or a charter school. NEWSWEEK also described new teaching strategies where there is continuous testing and student’s help each other prepare for exams. Teachers are likely to follow a group of students through their mastery of a number of subjects.

If this approach appears to be superior to others, then of course, there will be great support. However, so many new and old strategies have been hyped in the past that one is unsure until more results are published.
